Description

Geodesy underpins all satellite positioning technology which is a key enabler of spatial data interoperability and increasingly a requirement for sustainable development. However, geodesy requires ongoing investment by governments in the establishment of the global geodetic network infrastructure necessary to support the Global Geodetic Reference Frame. Since the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/69/266 "Global Geodetic Reference Frame for Sustainable Development" of February 26, 2015, geodesy has gained a place of relevance beyond its scientific aspects, because it makes visible in a more global aspect, the importance of having precise coordinates for multiple activities necessary in the framework of Sustainable Development. This talk presents the development of geodetic infrastructure and data in some developing countries, by providing examples of collaboration between countries, namely, Canada and Brazil; Denmark, Philippines, Indonesia and Africa; and the United States, Argentina and Bolivia. Furthermore, the creation and evolution of SIRGAS (a.k.a the Geodetic Reference System for the Americas) as the main source of geodetic data and capacity building in the developing world in the Americas, benefiting geographic and other government organizations as well as academia is presented. Lastly, this presentation showcases various societal benefits, focusing on the facilitation of geodetic services and their significant contributions to the economy. Specifically, it highlights the pivotal role of geodetic infrastructure and tools in land administration in Brazil, mining exploration in Chile, Earthquake Early Warning systems in Colombia, and the resulting advantages to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame and operations in developed nations.
