S6. Earth’s deep interior: models, theory and observations
This session invites contributions that are primarily focused on Studies of the Earth’s Deep Interior, specifically including lower mantle and core dynamics or observations clarifying mantle and core structure. Earth’s surface evolution is strongly controlled by the deep interior, due to the role of convection in the lower mantle. Mantle convection impacts both plate motion and heat loss from the liquid core, which controls inner core growth. Liquid core convection, on the other hand, is responsible for the Earth’s magnetic field generation. Results from numerical modelling studies, relevant laboratory experiments, theory-based calculations, seismic tomography studies, and other fields that aim to increase our understanding of the deep interior are all encouraged. Also welcome are studies focused on an understanding of the deep interiors of other terrestrial bodies, both extra-solar and within the solar system.
