Description

Treatment of men who have been abusive has often been coercive in its own way. Fox (1999) showed how facilitators in a cognitive skills group for prisoners “talked into being” the type of “angry criminal” needed for their treatment rationale to function. Following this logic, we will explore how talking to men who use abuse using both a language of effects and a language of responses moves toward creating implicit client types, such as “the violence machine” and the “out-of-control offender”. The relative therapeutic merits of each domain of discourse will be discussed, with attention to strategies for using these in collaborative as opposed to hierarchical ways. Our intention will be to shed light on how the assumptions of therapists impact therapeutic possibilities as we engage and work with fathers who have used violence.
