Groundwater and Silver – a perfect match?
Date & Time

Description
As climate change persists and precipitation becomes unpredictable, groundwater continues to be an increasingly sought-after resource. Recent New York Times reporting (Unchartered Water, 2023-2024) highlighted the over-exploitation of groundwater resources across the U.S. Unfortunately, this type of water (mis)management is global in scale. Having assembled, organized, interpreted and disseminated groundwater data via an on-line mapping portal for some 25 years, the Oak Ridges Moraine Groundwater Program (ORMGP) has blazed a path in water management. Access to raw groundwater data is an important first step towards improving water management in Canada. However, the often highly localized nature of groundwater systems, with users still needing to QA/QC, interpret the data, and then place it into a flow systems context, seems to diminish this first step. Linkages between climate, surface water and groundwater, linkages between water levels and aquifers, linkages between land use and recharge. To understand groundwater data and to put it to use in decision-making, these types of linkages need to be characterized and understood. Under the ORMGP, such linkages have been considered and are manifest on the ORMGP’s interactive mapping portal. Working with partner agencies and consulting companies, over $1 billion of digital infrastructure is in place and accessible to decision makers. Have you noticed the recent price of silver lately? Increasing in value nearly every day! For those in the know, this is very similar to groundwater. Aha – the linkage! Through the ORMGP, groundwater data is served up on a silver platter. Check it out!
