The Canadian Peatland Data Portal: A centralized location for Canada's peatland carbon data
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 26, 2026, 2:15 PM - 2:30 PM
Description
Canada’s vast peatlands are recognized as a vital research area for nature-based climate solutions with their significant carbon stocks at risk from the changing climate and resource development. Despite this, our understanding of peatland carbon cycling is limited by the lack of data availability and findability. Advancements have been made through efforts such as the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, which requires grant recipients to deposit their new data into repositories. However, data is scattered across several useful but often specialized databases such as AmeriFlux, Pangaea, and university databases. There are also significant amounts of unpublished data from older studies and grey literature. To improve data availability and findability with the aim of elevating our collective understanding of peatland carbon cycling, the Can-Peat project has developed the Canadian Peatland Data Portal. This metadata repository was designed not replace or duplicate existing efforts by bringing together Canadian peatland carbon metadata into one comprehensive, centralized location that links back to the original data sources. The Canadian Peatland Data Portal was developed as an open-access web-based tool with the University of Waterloo’s Climate Institute to uphold the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and CARE (Collective benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) principles around data ownership, licensing, and control in the platform. Additionally, Indigenous Data Sovereignty is supported through Local Contexts to show the presence of Indigenous Data. This talk will introduce the Canadian Peat Data Portal, demonstrate its functionality, and discuss tools to support Indigenous Data Sovereignty.
