Name
A Two-Eyed Seeing Approach to Muskeg and Peatland Research in Saskatchewan
Date & Time
Wednesday, May 27, 2026, 4:00 PM - 4:15 PM
Description
Saskatchewan has an estimated 60,000 km2 of peatlands that account for 7.3Gt of carbon stocks. They have received little regional- and local-scale attention from a policy and management perspective as evidenced by the lack of wetland policy and assessments in the northern regions of the province. However, these areas, traditionally known as muskegs (ᒪᐢᑫᐠ, maskīk, or maskek in Cree) meaning low-lying marsh, are home to critical traditional plants and provide northern communities with critical ecosystems services. To promote awareness, education, and policy advancement within province, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MN-S) has partnered with local researchers to advance our understanding of muskeg ecosystem services, traditional values, and carbon storage. To date, we have partnered with communities to illustrate these values through shared learning experiences and research participation in the Nisbet Forest and Lambert peat complex which are both under significant industrial pressure. In this presentation, I provide an overview of ongoing research with MN-S through the lens of two-eyed seeing and reciprocity as well as future directions and opportunities.
