Name
A Collective Path Forward for Peatlands in Canada
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 26, 2026, 11:45 AM - 12:00 PM
Description
Canada plays a critical role in global peatland stewardship: Canada contains roughly one-quarter of the world’s peatlands – amounting to the world’s largest peat carbon stock – and some of the world’s largest remaining intact, unconverted peatland complexes are located in Canada, particularly in the north. Despite its disproportionate global responsibility, Canada has no strategy or coordinated action at the national level for peatlands and there is wide variance in sub-national policy objectives and approaches. To fill this gap, WCS Canada has produced the National Peatland Strategy, informed by a systematic review of peatland-related law and policy and conversations with over 100 peatland knowledge-holders across the country. In this presentation, the key findings of the work will be discussed, including the limitations of current policy approaches being used in Canada to protect peatlands, opportunities for strengthened peatland governance, core elements of the National Peatland Strategy, and existing research gaps related to peatland law and policy.
