Description

We derive a high-resolution, vector-based lake-river routing GIS product over Canada called the Canadian Lake and River Hydrofabric (CLRH). The CLRH supplies all the necessary spatially distributed hydrological routing model inputs, including network topology, subbasin geometry, channel characteristics, and lake characteristics. All lakes in Canada that are 10 ha and greater in surface area are fully integrated into CLRH allowing for their explicit representation in hydrological models. All HYDAT hydrometric stations with drainage area boundaries updated by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in 2022/2023 (7896 stations) are included as explicit subbasin outlets. Hundreds of provincially operated hydrometric stations are also included as subbasin outlets in CLRH. The resultant hydrofabric has nearly 1,000,000 lakes explicitly represented and an average subbasin area of 5 km2. The core of CLRH is an enhanced Pan-Canadian 30 m flow direction raster (FDR) recently developed by ECCC that aligns mapped flow directions from Natural Resources Canada’s National Hydro Network with DEM-derived flow directions. Virtually all active WSC hydrometric stations are delineated in the CLRH to have drainage areas within 0.01% of ECCC’s pre-release hydrometric station polygons drainage areas. The open access CLRH is archived in ESRI-shapefile format and can be downloaded by hydrometric gauge ID using a convenient online map interface. In addition, a set of cloud-based Python GIS post-processing tools (BasinMaker) are available for customizing the resolution of the hydrometric station routing networks. The CLRH provides an excellent starting point for studies interested in lake-river network connectivity or watershed delineation and discretization.
