National Reference System Modernization in 2025: An overview of CGS efforts towards the definition and implementation of the new CSRS
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 28, 2024, 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM
Description

NRCan’s Canadian Geodetic Survey (CGS) plans to modernize the Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) in parallel with US reference system modernization in 2025. The CSRS update consists of the adoption of a new geometric reference frame called the North American Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (NATRF2022), replacing the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83(CSRS)), and an update to the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013) realized by a new North American geoid model that will be adopted by both countries. This requires the definition, planning, development and implementation of new systems, products and standards, and communication with stakeholders in both public and private sectors. CGS is working on these in collaboration with our partners at the US’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS). In addition, CGS is working with our provincial partners to support the adoption of the new CSRS as a common standard across their jurisdictions by 2030. In this presentation, we will highlight CGS’s efforts towards defining the new CSRS, and estimated timelines for the release of products and tools required for federal modernization in 2025. These highlights include: a new Canada-US geoid model; a new set of Euler Pole Parameters modeling the rotation of the North American plate; an updated analysis of GNSS time series; a new national crustal velocity model; and several updated CGS online tools which will use the new international gridding standards.
