S3: Roy Hyndman, a Canadian Pillar in Geophysical Research: Cascadia subduction zone and beyond
Date & Time
Tuesday, May 28, 2024, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Description

The late Dr. Roy D. Hyndman has had a distinguished career and a lasting influence in many fields of Earth sciences. In this session, we commemorate Dr. Hyndman’s seminal contributions to understanding the architecture, dynamics and hazards of the Cascadia subduction zone and other global subduction zones. We invite contributions from a range of disciplines examining subduction zone processes and dynamics, including earthquakes and seismicity (upper- and lower-plate earthquakes and interface events), slow earthquakes (e.g., episodic tremor and slip) from seismic and geodetic data, geophysical imaging of subduction zone structures, numerical modelling of subduction zone dynamics, ruptures, and earthquake cycle deformation, laboratory and experimental studies of subduction zone materials’ properties, the source, the impact, and the destination of fluids across the subduction system, as well as implementation of earthquake early warning systems. In this session, we will focus predominantly on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, including its transition to other tectonic regimes at its north and south boundaries, but welcome studies of other subduction zones globally. The objective is to hold a session that mirrors the essence of his research, transcending traditional boundaries and embodying the interdisciplinary spirit that he championed by crossing "the boundaries of land and ocean, geology and geophysics, and fundamental research and societal needs" (quote from the citation for his 2017 Geological Association of Canada Logan Medal).
