Name
IAH4 Bridging the Gap: Groundwater in Freshwater Communication and Education
Description
Effective communication and education around freshwater resources are essential to addressing today’s environmental challenges. While surface water often dominates public discourse, groundwater—an invisible yet vital component of the freshwater system—is frequently overlooked by those not directly dependent on it. This session will explore innovative approaches to communicating and educating about both water quality and quantity, connections to surface waters and cryosphere, with a special emphasis on integrating groundwater into broader freshwater narratives. Topics covered may also include how various geodesy approaches such as satellite methods and data mapping can add to groundwater communication and education.
We invite contributions that highlight successful outreach, education, and engagement strategies across diverse audiences, including youth, communities, policymakers, and educators. Topics may include digital storytelling, policy changes, curriculum development, citizen science, Indigenous knowledge integration, role of news and media, and community-based water monitoring. Organizations that provide open-access educational materials, or empower youth to tackle water challenges, exemplify the kinds of initiatives we aim to showcase. By bringing together researchers, educators, communicators, and advocates, this session will foster dialogue on how to make groundwater more visible and relevant in environmental education and public engagement.
We welcome case studies, tools, and frameworks that support inclusive, accessible, and impactful water communication—ensuring groundwater is not just part of the conversation, but central to it.
