Name
Satellite Earth Observation in Action: Geointelligence in Disaster Management
Date & Time
Friday, May 23, 2025, 1:45 PM - 2:00 PM
Description

Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Emergency Geomatics Service (EGS), under the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO), supports the national and international emergency response efforts by providing rapid disaster mapping services. This presentation will give an overview of the service and highlight examples of how it uses satellite imagery and advanced remote sensing technologies to assess the impact of natural disasters like floods, geohazards, and wildfires, enhancing situational awareness and supporting efficient and informed decision-making. Amongst other examples, we will explore our response to the flooding events in British Columbia in 2021, how we monitored the spring ice cover breakup over the MackEnzie River NT, and the 2024 Jasper, Alberta disaster. The presentation will conclude by exploring emerging technologies and their potential to reshape emergency management response in Canada.
