Science literacy and public trust in science have been growing concerns in the past few years. The RAInDROP Project at the University of Waterloo aims to increase scientific literacy and trust in scientific data in grade 8 students through a rainfall monitoring citizen science project. The RAInDROP Project will provide grade 8 students in Ontario with the knowledge, skills, and materials needed to collect rainfall data that can be used by researchers and professional in their community. Students will be engaged in hands-on activities to discover key ideas about rainfall monitoring. Using what they’ve learned through the activities, students will collect rainfall data and submit it to an online database where their teacher and peers can view their measurements. The data students collect can be used in future curriculum connected classroom activities related to math, language, and geography. The activities provided to classrooms are connected to specific learning expectations in the Grade 8 Science and Technology curriculum, to encourage teachers to participate in the project in the long term. The project will provide students with the opportunity to learn science literacy skills while becoming scientists and collecting data for professionals in their community to use for city planning and research.
