In the Lhùʼààn Mânʼ (Kluane Lake) region, southwest Yukon, rapid climate change is impacting ecosystems and residents; however, surrounding First Nations often lack access to relevant research outputs for decision-making. The Yukon’s research landscape is also rapidly changing, and while many researchers are interested in engaging local citizens in their projects, little guidance exists about how to build respectful and effective partnerships in this context. In response, Kluane First Nation (KFN) partnered with university researchers on the Bringing Research Home (BRH) project to collaboratively study how they, as a self-governing First Nation, could enhance their ability to actively drive and participate in research in the Lhùʼààn Mânʼ region, with a focus on climate change as the integrating theme. Centred on KFN values, knowledge and needs, project objectives were to: (1) gather and synthesize existing climate change research in the region, (2) strengthen KFN capacity to engage in research, and (3) mobilize knowledge about climate change and ethical research practices. KFN youth and community members contributed to several outputs. The project supported KFN in hosting two Research Summits (2019 and 2023), which brought researchers and community members into conversation about how to build better research relationships. KFN also developed place-based ‘Researcher Expectations’ to better guide researchers in the region. These Expectations are housed on the www.kluanefirstnationresearch.ca website, which also includes Research Summit reports, two KFN storymaps, an interactive map of climate change research, and additional researcher resources. Together, these provide a foundation for more positive, respectful and ethical research in the Lhùʼààn Mânʼ region.
