Name
Ecological Connectivity Assessment to Support Protected Areas Design in PEI
Description
During the 40th Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers, Resolution 40-3 was passed, recognizing the significance of the Appalachian-Acadian forest. This resolution highlights the forest's importance on both local and global scales. For Prince Edward Island, local commitment is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Appalachian-Acadian forest.
The signing of Resolution 40-3 by Wade MacLauchlan, Premier of Prince Edward Island and conference Co-Chair, reinforced a collaborative effort to maintain and restore ecological connectivity. This commitment not only supports conservation efforts but also contributes to Pathway to Canada Target 1, a nationwide protected area and connectivity strategy.
This poster showcases efforts to identify and understand ecological connectivity to inform future conservation initiatives in Prince Edward Island. The poster highlights Circuitscape analyses conducted in 2020 and 2025 across natural ecosystems, along with an assessment of protected area connectivity using two different approaches: Pro-Net and Sentinel Nodes.
