Description
Experiential learning offers invaluable educational benefits by immersing students in real-world experiences that deepen their understanding of the environment in which we live and may offer opportunities for students to meet professionals in the field who are working toward environmental solutions. Examples of field-based activities studying geographic processes, ecology, and experiencing different environments, students gain firsthand knowledge of the dynamic and vulnerable nature of the role we play in monitoring and evaluating different ecosystems. Experiential learning provides opportunities to meet with professionals, academics, and First Nations communities, and visitors to new locations, enhancing students' understanding of both the scientific and cultural dimensions of environmental management. A crucial component of new opportunities is to identify best practices and resources for field work and experiential education. A narrative synthesis examining experiential learning opportunities was used to examine current literature from a range of disciplines outlining experiential learning and field work opportunities. This presentation describes previous experiences and literature that highlights the value of including geographic experiential learning, and examples of what students have found to be most beneficial in field trip experiences.
