Date & Time

Description
Food insecurity remains a critical global challenge, disproportionately affecting marginalized populations and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. Despite being a developed nation, Canada has not been immune to this crisis. Research indicates that Black families and their children experience significantly higher rates of food insecurity compared to their non-Black counterparts. However, studies and policy interventions specifically addressing the food needs of Black households remain limited. This study seeks to contribute to this gap by (i) identifying the key factors contributing to food insecurity among Black individuals and (ii) examining how race and other intersecting identity markers shape their experiences of food insecurity. The study is based on data from eight focus group discussions, each involving ten participants from the Greater Toronto Area. Findings reveal two primary themes: (1) financial constraints, where competing expenses, limited food quantity, and increased costs pose significant barriers to food security, and (2) limited availability and accessibility of culturally appropriate foods, with participants reporting a lack of nearby sources for such foods and the need to travel long distances to obtain them. Based on these findings, two key recommendations emerge. First, policymakers should implement targeted financial assistance programs that address the specific economic challenges Black households face in securing adequate and nutritious food. Second, initiatives should be developed to increase the availability and accessibility of culturally relevant foods through support for Black-owned food businesses and community-led food distribution networks. Addressing these issues is essential to reducing food insecurity and promoting equitable food access for Black communities in Canada.
