Name
Our Food Future': A regional food circularity case study
Date & Time
Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 10:30 AM - 10:45 AM
Description
Linear food systems have led to enormous quantities of wasted food, appalling levels of food insecurity, and the excessive release of greenhouse gas emissions that negatively contribute to the climate crisis. In response to these impacts, a multi-stakeholder group of community changemakers from municipal governments, post-secondary institutions, non-profit organizations, local businesses, and social enterprises came together to create ‘Our Food Future’ in Guelph-Wellington, Ontario. Our Food Future aimed to develop a regional circular food system funded through Infrastructure Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge. This study involved interviews with individuals (n = 35) who contributed to the development and/or implementation of Our Food Future’s programming and initiatives to explore the project’s governance model and to identify lessons learned from this municipally led circular economy initiative. The results reveal that participants valued the project’s holistic approach to food systems and a diversity of environmental, social, and economic impacts resulting from the project’s deliverables. Perceived enablers to success include the project’s timely focus on food and circularity, an emphasis on inclusion and collaboration, and the use of a municipal governance model. Participants explained how circularity could and should be institutionalized within municipal structures and described municipalities as sites of long-term change. Yet, participants also expressed concern for the continuity of the project achievements, given the structural constraints of predominant funding models and governmental priorities. This study functions as one of the first regional food circularity case studies, with the goal of enabling project learnings to be applied to other geographies.
