Description
Housing affordability has gained considerable attention and has emerged as a Canada-wide issue, affecting millions. The city, Halifax, Nova Scotia, once identified as one of the relatively affordable places to live regarding rental housing has shifted from being relatively less affordable to one of the most expensive cities to live in Canada. Among the population widely affected are international students. This research aims to explore the experiences of international students in the rental housing market in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and to investigate how their experiences may differ from those of domestic students. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining an online survey (target N=200, including both domestic and international students) with semi-structured interviews (target sample N=12, limited to only international students). Thematic analysis is performed using Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) Miner to identify and group significant themes and patterns from the data collected. Based on anonymity, the postal codes from responses in the survey are geocoded using GIS Pro to show the spatial distribution patterns of both domestic and international students in Halifax. This paper reports the preliminary findings of the study, highlighting the unique experiences of international students in navigating the rental housing market in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
