Date & Time

Description
This paper explores the role of policy actors and actions in responding to climate change and urbanization risks that impact on human health, bringing to fore policy contents that respond to climate events and influence diet and physical activity behaviours in Lagos. The syndemic indicators of climate change hazards events (sea level rise, flooding, heat waves, fresh water depletion, land degradation, drought, air pollution) between 2012 and 2022, were identified in a consultation workshop (involving NGOs, researchers, academics, policymakers, community organisations, technical specialists, business owners, environmentalists). Participants in the workshop gave referral to relevant policy documents that address specific climate change hazard events/ urban resilience, that consider key pathways to health (physical activity, food environments, and air pollution-free public spaces). A review of Seven (7) accessible intersectoral national and state policies on related climate change/urban resilience was done. The result shows that about 50 to 85% of the policy documents on climate change hazard have differentiated impact on men, women, youth, physically challenged and the poor as well as their livelihoods due to their distinct roles and responsibilities in the society. However, none of the policy documents addresses specific climate change hazard events and there were no linkages between climate hazards and diet, physical activity, children/adolescents/women, and Non-Communicable Disease in all reviewed documents The paper recommends promotion of public enlightenment targeted at climate change and resilience issues in the context of diet and physical activity to aid an integrated action for the pursuance for viable climate change/urban resilience/urban health.
