Name
Perceptions of Childhood Air Pollution Exposure on Long-term Health: A Community-Based Participatory Approach
Date & Time
Thursday, May 22, 2025, 3:15 PM - 3:30 PM
Description
Childhood exposure to air pollution has been associated with a wide range of long-term health outcomes, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Gaining insight into how individuals perceive the impact of early-life environmental exposures on their health in adulthood can help inform public health interventions. This study builds on the historical Hamilton Child Cohort (1975 – 1986) by tracing and re-engaging original participants through social media platforms (Facebook and LinkedIn). It aims to explore how these individuals, now in their 50s, understand and perceive the influence of childhood air pollution exposure on their current health. The study includes participants from diverse Hamilton regions, including the industrial region, suburban neighborhoods, and areas with varying socioeconomic and environmental conditions. Using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, this study will use focus groups and a modified Photovoice method to create in-depth discussions. Thematic analysis will be used to examine qualitative data, with a specific focus on how various childhood residential neighborhoods shape health perceptions. Findings are expected to increase the understanding of the relationship between early environmental exposures and later-life health perceptions, contributing valuable insights to both health and environmental research.
