“It brings economic pain, emotional stress, and havoc in the household”. The lived experiences of long-COVID management among racialized immigrants and racialized non-immigrants in Ontario’s Peel Region
Date & Time

Description
While long COVID is a growing public health crisis, thus far little attention has been given to the lived experiences of managing the condition. This is particularly true among racialized immigrant and racialized non-immigrant groups – two demographics identified as having higher long COVID rates and disparities in access to long COVID diagnostic testing and treatment. Drawing on data from ten focus group discussions with racialized immigrants and racialized non-immigrants with long COVID in Ontario’s Peel Region, this presentation unpacks the challenges and lived experiences of navigating the condition. The results reveal that individuals experience a range of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial health challenges that impact activities of daily living, including medical dismissal, incompatible employment arrangements, and societal stigma that impede opportunities for health management and potential recovery. The findings reveal that a failure to recognize long COVID as a legitimate health condition exacerbates individual’s challenges and creates new and uneven responsibilities of care for family members. We close with a discussion of the findings for policy and practice.
