Description
The rapid growth of e-commerce is reshaping the retail landscape across the Caribbean. Driven by user-friendly online shopping platforms and international logistics service providers that enable unprecedented cross-border connectivity, traditional (often small, informal and in-person) retail practices are gradually being erased from the urban scene. These new retail networks enhance the global reach of major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, SHEIN, Temu, AliExpress, eBay, and Walmart, while also providing Caribbean consumers with access to a wider selection of more affordable goods and services. Consequently, the retail environment has become more fragmented and competitive, with many small businesses struggling to adapt and compete. This transformation, however, carries significant implications for local economies—including job losses, economic leakage, increased packaging waste, and shifting consumer behaviour that favours convenience and ‘foreignness’.
The shift away from socially embedded retail raises important questions for policymakers about the preservation of local economies amid expanding online competition. By exploring the intersection of digital commerce and international logistics, this research project charts the evolution of the Caribbean retail landscape and how the recent expansion of e-commerce into the region is redefining the local retail sector for both buyers and sellers.
