Name
The locational decisions of Electric Vehicle companies in Ontario: Insight from Interviews
Date & Time
Friday, May 23, 2025, 8:45 AM - 9:00 AM
Description
Ontario is shifting towards electric vehicle manufacturing over the past decade. The new electric vehicle (EV) plants that are located in Ontario provide an opportunity to understand the locational decisions of firms. However, due to its recency, little information has been discovered as to why EV plants are located in the Ontario region. To examine the underlying reason and provide greater understanding of the locating decisions, this report aims to uncover why EV firms and battery assembly plants are located in the Ontario region. To do so, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 9 participants (n=9) who were local actors involved in EV locating decisions or had intimate knowledge of EV plant location rationale. The preliminary findings indicate that influencing firms' locating decisions surrounds three key factors: regional characteristics, economic environment, and institution environment.
