Supporting Girls' Sport Participation in the Greater Toronto Area: Exploring Parental Decisions and Developing an Evidence-Based Toolkit
Date & Time

Description
Pre-adolescence is a critical stage for developing healthy habits and well-being. Physical activity (PA) during this period provides numerous physical, psychological, and social benefits. Despite this, fewer than 25% of children in North America meet daily PA guidelines. Organized sports can help bridge this gap, yet girls’ participation declines with age, with one in five dropping out during adolescence—a much higher rate than boys. As a result, over one million girls across Canada miss out on the benefits of sport.
Parental involvement plays a key role in shaping girls' sport experiences, yet little is known about what factors influence their decisions, and few resources exist to support parents in this role. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with parents of daughters aged 6 to 12 in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where accessibility, infrastructure, and neighborhood characteristics impact sports participation. Thematic analysis identified nine themes across three categories: 1) Sport Criteria: Sport Type, Challenge Level, and Stereotypes; 2) Daughter’s Representation: Influence, Enjoyment, and Self-efficacy; and 3) Parental Roles and Experiences: Sport History, Perceived Importance, and Support.
These findings inform the development of a toolkit to help parents make informed decisions about their daughters’ sport participation. The toolkit will be evaluated through a pre- and post-intervention study in the GTA to assess its effectiveness in improving participation rates, enhancing enjoyment, and reducing dropout among pre-adolescent girls in the GTA. This research fosters sustained sports engagement among girls by equipping parents with resources, supporting healthier, more active lifestyles for girls in Ontario.
