A pragmatist paradigm for mixed methods research in geography: Towards a methodological and disciplinary confluence to tackle complexity

Description
During the last decades, the qualitative-quantitative dualism has been less significant in at least part of English- and French-speaking geography (Bailly & Ferras, 2018; Cope, 2010). This paves the way for an enrichment of the field through a triangulation of approaches, methods and data (Elwood, 2010). However, mixed methods require to consider the epistemological implications of the applied methodologies. We want to reflect upon the integration of qualitative and quantitative methods from different geographical traditions or other disciplines within a single research project. To do so, we suggest assuming a pragmatist paradigm (Kaushik & Walsh, 2019) and applying it to a mixed methods research (Tashakkori & Creswell, 2007). This contribution will draw on a PhD research on ecological community living in rural spaces of Quebec and France. It integrated fieldwork, discourse analysis, spatial analysis and hyperlink network analysis. Hence, while we kept a geographer’s perspective, we stood at crossroads of diverse social and human sciences, including geography, linguistics and political science. This helped us address our research object through different lenses and scales, each one bringing its own light and the combination of them allowing even more results. The outcomes are more fruitful that would have been a compilation of separate single method research. However, this proved time-consuming and to master the diverse approaches constituted a challenge. This epistemo-methodological framework would therefore be more suitable for teamwork. Still, we consider it a promising way towards a methodological and disciplinary confluence. We need it more than ever facing the ever-increasing complexity of contemporary challenges in geography and beyond.
