The research project titled “Mapping of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirits (MMIWG2S+) in Quebec” is led by a tripartite collaboration between Quebec Native Women, The Iskweu Project of the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, and the Université du Québec en Outaouais. This initiative follows the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (NIIMMIWG), with a particular focus on the situation in Quebec. Although a complementary Kepek-Québec report has been produced, it highlights that only limited data is available on the experiences of MMIWG2S+ individuals in Quebec. The project aims to elevate the voices of affected families through mapping while identifying the various forms of gender-based violence across different regions of Quebec. The primary goals of the project are as follows: 1.Access new statistical data from public agencies, including police services (non-Indigenous), the Quebec coroner's office, the ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec, and Statistics Canada. 2.Consult and validate findings directly with First Nations families affected by the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Quebec. 3.Gather qualitative data (such as accounts, names, stories, and recollections) about missing and murdered women, girls, and two-spirited people (and not excluding men) from First Nations communities and local partner organizations in urban centers. 4.Co-create an awareness-raising tool (an interactive map) that will summarize the data gathered by this collaboration, thus reaching a broader audience. This presentation will focus on goal (4), detailing the current progress of the project. It involves categorizing different forms of violence, analyzing the challenges we face, and understanding the limitations imposed by colonial frameworks that shape the way missing and murdered Indigenous people are described. Through a narrative and interactive web map, we aim to create a more accurate and comprehensive portrayal of this issue in Quebec, reflecting the complexity of the data that shapes our map in an inclusive and holistic manner.
