Name
At the confluence of spaces: mapping and GIS for geographies that have moved beyond an absolute space
Date & Time
Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 3:30 PM - 3:45 PM
Description
Geographers have richly relational, processual, and in some cases, perspectival and interpretative, approaches to space. How can such spaces be engaged by GIS and mapping traditionally tied to an absolute notion of space? Here, we begin by reviewing some examples of strategies of potential relevance, those being developed by others as well as by us in our collaborations. However, we also argue for the potential importance of generalizing the concept and method of ‘projection’ away from a mathematical tool of cartographic translation to a concept (and associated computational apparatus) capable of bringing disparate geographical spaces into interpretative visualization and practical engagement within GIS and mapping.
