Description

This workbook offers a comprehensive guide to accessing, managing, and visualizing Canadian geospatial data. It focuses on datasets available through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and Statistics Canada. All analysis will be through QGIS or Google Earth. The workbook is structured into three sections. The first section introduces users to accessing raster (e.g., digital elevation models, land use and satellite images) and vector (e.g., landscape features and statistical boundaries) GIS datasets from government and library resources. The second section covers the management of data, including exporting and reprojecting vector data, clipping rasters as well as joining tabular data to statistical boundaries. The final section emphasizes the visualization of data, starting with the basics of cartography and progressing to advanced topics such as labeling, symbology, and 3-D visualization in Google Earth. By the end of the workbook, users will have the skills to create professional maps with appropriate scales, projections, and symbology, suitable for academic or professional purposes.
