How do we show human geography students the amazing potential of spatial analysis?
Date & Time

Description
Skills in using GIS software to share and analyze spatial data are in high demand. Students often assume that GIS software and other spatial analysis tools require complex statistical analysis and quantitative skills; however, their use in qualitative work, including in human geography research and learning, is important and impactful. We see a need to introduce students in introductory human geography classes to using GIS in order to make the software less intimidating and to allow students to explore the vast potential of using geographic methods to tell human, place-based stories. Together with our GIS coordinator, Dr. Paul Hunt, we are developing and piloting an introduction to GIS for human geography students that can be adapted for use by any instructor. It incorporates a scaffolded structure throughout the semester in which students are introduced to spatial analysis and given a chance to try it out.
