Description
Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is an ancient practice that has gained popularity in several countries worldwide due to its recognized social, environmental, and economic benefits. UPA generally involves growing food and raising animals in and around cities and can serve multiple purposes, such as self-consumption and food marketing. The research that generated the results to be presented is part of the author's master's dissertation, conducted at São Paulo State University in Brazil. The study aimed to characterize UPA in the municipality of Regente Feijó, São Paulo, to contribute to the dissemination and expansion of knowledge about food production in urban and peri-urban spaces, as well as to inform the development and implementation of policies that support and promote this type of agriculture. The research included a literature review to understand the concept and characteristics of UPA and its historical context in Brazil. Primary data were collected through interviews with urban and peri-urban farmers in Regente Feijó and representatives of municipal public institutions. The findings indicate that UPA in the municipality is rich in biodiversity and primarily intended for self-consumption, though some cases of commercialization were identified. UPA plays a significant role in local food security. The activity is predominantly practiced by older individuals from rural backgrounds, with the main challenges being the lack of urban space for production and limited financial resources for investment in crops.
