Name
Exploring Healing Gardens in Healthcare Settings in Canada: A Cross-case Study
Date & Time
Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 4:00 PM - 4:15 PM
Description
My proposed Ph.D. research is an exploratory examination of the user-reported benefits in healthcare settings. The study will also examine how decisions are made for incorporating gardens in healthcare settings, facilitators, and barriers to their implementation, and provide evidence-based design and planning recommendations. My goal is to support the provision of healing gardens in Canadian healthcare settings. My project will gather feedback from hospital users (patients, staff, visitors) and the perspectives of hospital administrators, landscape architects and planners. I will use a cross-case study-based approach and mixed methods to collect data from up to six (6) hospitals in Canadian top-tier (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal) and middle-tier (Edmonton, Ottawa) cities. I will use both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, including observations/field notes, semi-structured interviews, surveys, and document analysis. Additionally, standardized landscape design evaluation may also be used. The study will incorporate recent literature on therapeutic spaces, healing gardens, human behaviour and the environment. By using case studies, I will gather contextually grounded insights and perspectives on the design quality and user-reported efficacy of healing gardens and pinpoint areas of improvement based on the needs and requirements of the hospital users. It is expected that Canadian hospital administrators, landscape architects/planners, and relevant government agencies can build on the findings of the study.
