Name
Investigating Interventions For Canadian Climate Health Impacts: A Scoping Review Of Reviews
Date & Time
Wednesday, May 21, 2025, 2:00 PM - 2:15 PM
Description
With existing evidence suggesting that climate change is “virtually certain”, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, calls for public health to prepare for the now inevitable health impacts of climate change. With the recent emergence and growing abundance of systematic reviews in climate change adaptation, there remains a need for a comprehensive synthesis of interventions that can be implemented to address the Canadian climate health risks of (1) natural hazards, (2) psychosocial health and wellbeing, (3) air quality, (4) infectious diseases, (5) water quality, quantity, and security, (6) and food safety and security. This scoping review of reviews (1) characterizes the extent, range, and nature of secondary literature on community-level climate change adaptation interventions for impacts on health and wellbeing, (2) documents suggested, implemented, and/or evaluated interventions that are feasible for implementation within the mandate and jurisdiction of public health agencies in Canada, (3) and documents reported facilitators and barriers to the implementation of community-level interventions. Search terms related to select countries, climate change, health and wellbeing, interventions, and the six anticipated future climate risks in Canada were used to extract articles from Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science. Using COVIDENCE, a systematic approach was used for article selection and data extraction as guided by PRISMA-ScR. The scoping review provides a catalog of local-level interventions for climate change impacts on health and wellbeing that can be implemented by public health units in Ontario. As effective adaptation is contextual, findings enable decision-makers to make evidence-informed decisions within their local contexts.
