Description
Nature is an important need for many, and vital for keep us emotionally, psychologically, and physically healthy. In Southern Ontario, there is a growing movement of adopting nature-based social prescribing (NbSP) in the health and social care system. This promising approach involves patients receiving a referral, recommendation or a prescription to spend time outdoors, through passive and active activities such as walking clubs, and receiving free access passes to nature spaces. This study explores the perspectives of prescribers (clinicians, social workers, link workers) and nature service providers (i.e. Environmental Stewards, Nature Practitioners, Forest Therapists) engaged in NbSP programs in Southern Ontario. Within this context, this research examined the motivations, perceived benefits and challenges of implementing and accessing NbSP through semi-structured key informant interviews. Preliminary findings highlight the spatial, social, and institutional factors shaping NbSP. Reported observed benefits include enhanced social connection, mental wellbeing, and a strengthen sense of place to nature, and systemic barriers, including inequitable access to green space, healthcare integration challenges, and variable program sustainability pose significant limitations. These insights build upon nature and health research in Canada, revealing a need for more research towards NbSP, and can inform policy, program, and communication efforts seeking to advance the role of natural environments in fostering wellbeing.
