Date & Time

Description

This paper investigates the relationship between narratives and maps, exploring the potential of narrative cartography to construct different forms of narratives. Focusing on three distinct types of narratives—small stories, counter-narratives, and affective stories—the paper illustrates how narrative cartography can enable the creation and exploration of these various forms of stories. To demonstrate this, the study examines Parc-Extension, a neighborhood in Montreal undergoing rapid socio-spatial transformations driven by gentrification. By using an online narrative mapping tool, the project aimed to understand how different types of stories can be generated through narrative maps and how these stories can illuminate the contested dynamics of gentrification in the area. Through the exploration and visualization of different forms of narratives, the paper argues that narrative cartography can facilitate the transcendence and connection between different forms of stories, offering a more nuanced approach to reconceptualizing the complexities of processes affecting Parc-Extension. It argues that narrative cartography should extend beyond merely serving as a methodological tool for mapping stories and, instead, focus on exploring the potential of engaging with various forms of stories.
